Beyond “eye-candy”: improving learning with animations
نویسنده
چکیده
The use of animations is becoming increasingly widespread in electronic learning materials. Authoring animations is now relatively straightforward, even for university teachers without advanced computing skills. Many lecturers want to know how to convert the traditional static pictures and diagrams in textbooks into instructionally effective animated presentations. This presentation will show how this can be done by demonstrating animations that have been specifically designed to make learning easier by applying simple but powerful principles of visual learning. These principles are derived from human information processing research and are applicable to many different types of instructional content. When students are given static pictures that are meant to represent dynamic subject matter, they are faced with the cognitive burden of having to “mentally animate” the content. However, well-designed animations can eliminate this burden so that learner thinking processes are freed up and can be devoted to educationally worthwhile activity such as the development of understanding. The animations to be demonstrated were developed using a step-by-step design strategy that will be described in this presentation. Practical approaches for analysing the instructional content to facilitate the design of effective animations from static pictures will be explained and illustrated with a number of animated examples.

متن کاملCueing animations: Dynamic signaling aids information extraction and comprehension
The effectiveness of animations containing two novel forms of animation cueing that target relations between event units rather than individual entities was compared with that of animations containing conventional entity-based cueing or no cues. These relational event unit cues (progressive path and local coordinated cues) were specifically designed to support key learning processes posited by ...
متن کاملThe Impact of Designing and Evaluating Molecular Animations on How Well Middle School Students Understand the Particulate Nature of Matter
In this study, we investigated whether the understanding of the particulate nature of matter by students was improved by allowing them to design and evaluate molecular animations of chemical phenomena. We developed Chemation, a learner-centered animation tool, to allow seventh-grade students to construct ßipbook-like simple animations to showmolecular models and dynamic processes. Eight classes...
متن کاملMeasuring the Perception of Facial Expressions in American Sign Language Animations with Eye Tracking
Our lab has conducted experimental evaluations of ASL animations, which can increase accessibility of information for signers with lower literacy in written languages. Participants watch animations and answer carefully engineered questions about the information content. Because of the labor-intensive nature of our current evaluation approach, we seek techniques for measuring user’s reactions to...
متن کاملProblem-based learning (PBL):Developing learning capability through the WWW
One interactive learning strategy that holds considerable potential for supporting more learner centred forms of teaching and learning is problem-based learning (PBL). Problem-based learning “ ...is an approach to structuring the curriculum which involves confronting students with problems from practice which provide a stimulus for learning” (Boud & Feletti, 1997). At a more fundamental level P...
